Life as a TA

Sahithi Sarva

Over the last three semesters, I have had the opportunity and privilege to be a teaching assistant to Professor Michelle Soledad. During my time as a first-year Engineering student, I constantly found myself excited to attend my ENGE 1215 and ENGE 1216 classes. I noticed that I was eager to collaborate with my peers and create solutions to existing problems. ENGE 1215 and 1216 consisted of learning and developing Engineering problem-solving skills, data collection and analysis skills, and the usage of new software programs. The main reason I enjoyed this class was due to the ability to make a change. I noticed that the projects assigned throughout the class were all related to issues we experienced as college students and Hokies. Due to my passion for this class, after completing ENGE 1215 and 1216, I decided to become a teaching assistant for the following classes.

Professor Soledad has a team of five to six teaching assistants each semester. Half of the team is grading assistants, and the other half consists of supporting assistants. Supporting assistants aid Professor Soledad during in-class hours; their duties primarily consist of delivering lectures, leading discussion sections, and facilitating group work. Grading assistants grade students’ assignments and provide crucial feedback. During my time on the team, I have been a grading assistant. In addition to the normal tasks, I also hold office hours and attend in-person classes when necessary. Beyond teaching, the TA team often handles various administrative duties, such as taking attendance, managing the Canvas and course websites, and maintaining grade records. Completing these tasks ensures that the course runs smoothly and that both students and instructors have the information they need.

Being a teaching assistant under Professor Soledad has been one of the most rewarding experiences. I have been able to understand a course from the perspective of both a student and a teacher, which has been invaluable. In addition to providing guidance for Professor Soledad, I have developed a network of Engineers who are able to support me through my personal Engineering career.

One of the most fulfilling aspects of being a TA has been witnessing the growth and success of students firsthand. Helping students grasp complex concepts and watching their confidence build over time is incredibly gratifying. It has allowed me to refine my communication and leadership skills, ensuring that I can effectively convey ideas and foster a supportive learning environment.

Moreover, this role has given me a sense of responsibility and pride in contributing to the academic success of others. It’s not just about assisting with coursework but also about being a mentor and a resource for students who might be navigating the same challenges I once faced. The experience has deepened my passion for education and mentoring, and it has solidified my commitment to helping others succeed in their academic and professional journeys.

The connections I have made, both with students and fellow teaching assistants, have enriched my experience and provided me with a strong support network. These relationships have extended beyond the classroom, offering me insights into different areas of Engineering and opening doors to future opportunities.

In conclusion, being a teaching assistant has been more than just a role; it has been a journey of personal and professional growth. The skills, relationships, and experiences I have gained are invaluable, and they will undoubtedly influence my future endeavors in the field of Engineering.
